Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers on cost, timing, preparation and what to expect when painting a home in Brisbane.
Cost & Pricing
How much does it cost to paint a house in Brisbane?
We price most jobs at about $1,100 per painter per day, based on an employee model (not subcontractors). That includes premium paint, all materials, wages, super, GST and overheads. A typical four-person crew on a five-day exterior restoration runs around $22,000. Exact pricing depends on house size, prep and access.
How much does it cost to paint the interior of a house in Brisbane?
The same day rate applies. A standard 3-bed, 2-bath interior typically lands around $15,000 to $30,000 depending on ceiling heights, trim and colour changes. We will itemise everything in a fixed quotation.
What factors affect the cost of a house-painting job?
The main factors are:
- Square metreage and number of storeys
- Surface condition (stripping, filling, lead removal)
- Access equipment (scaffolds, EWP)
- Paint system specified (standard acrylic vs specialty membranes)
- Weather buffers
- Number of colours
- Any travel or accommodation outside metro Brisbane
Do painters charge by the hour or by the job in Brisbane?
Per job, not per hour. Internal costings use the $1,100-a-day formula. Variations and extras can be billed hourly, derived from $1,100 over an 8-hour day. Subcontract teams may quote less because they exclude super, leave loading and warranty reserves.
What should I look for in a painting quote?
Clear scope, surface-prep details, paint brand and number of coats, inclusions (materials, access gear, rubbish removal), timeline, warranty terms and QBCC licence number. Confirm the onsite crew are employees, not subcontractors.
Timing & Weather
What is the best time of year to paint a house in Brisbane?
Exteriors: April to October. Interiors: year-round.
Can painting be done during Brisbane's hot summers or rainy season?
Yes. We start early, work in shade, and pause exteriors during downpours. Fast-drying or hot-weather additives (max 5%) keep finishes smooth when temperatures spike.
How does Brisbane's climate affect an exterior paint job?
High UV, humidity and storm events mean preparation is king: thorough washing, mould treatment and flexible, UV-stable acrylics extend life beyond the usual 8 to 10 years.
What if it rains during my house-painting project?
Fresh paint that is washed off is re-coated at our cost. Once the film has cured, rain is harmless. We monitor BOM forecasts and build weather days into the schedule.
Preparation & Process
How should I prepare my home before the painters arrive?
Remove small valuables, centre lightweight furniture, and (optionally) sugar-soap greasy walls. We will move heavy items and fully protect floors and furnishings.
Do I need to move my furniture or cover belongings before painting starts?
Please move what you can. We handle the rest and protect with brand-new plastic, drop-sheets, and professional Protecta floor-covering systems.
Will the painters protect my furniture and floors while painting?
Yes. No surface is left uncovered. We use Protecta floor-covering systems plus plastic wrap and drop-sheets.
Do I need to be home while the painting work is happening?
Not necessary. Many clients work off-site. We just need access and a local contact number for progress updates.
What kind of surface preparation do professional painters do before painting?
Wash or sugar-soap, scrape and sand failing coatings, fill cracks and holes, spot-prime or full-prime as required. We use Festool dust-extraction sanders. If lead is present we switch to eco paint strippers with full containment.
Will painters fix cracks or holes in the walls before painting?
Yes. Minor plaster repairs, gap-sealing and timber patching are standard. Extensive gyprock replacement is quoted separately.
Can you paint over wallpaper, or does it need to be removed first?
Best practice is full removal. If the paper is immovable, we can seal and paint, but it will still look like painted wallpaper.
Do I need to remove old or peeling paint before new paint is applied?
No. We mechanically remove anything unsound, feather edges and prime bare substrate. If lead is present we use non-caustic paint stripper under containment.
Do I need to purchase the paint myself, or will it be supplied by the painters?
We supply all paint and sundries. That ensures correct product selection, genuine batch numbers and full manufacturer warranty.
How many coats of paint will be applied for a good finish?
One primer or undercoat plus two top-coats in most cases. Dramatic colour changes or bare timber may need extra build. We almost always apply a third gloss coat on trims.
Can DHPainting handle lead paint if my house has old lead-based paint?
Yes. Our specialist restoration team is trained in safe lead abatement and uses eco-friendly, non-caustic paint strippers with full containment and disposal protocols.
Paint Materials & Quality
What type of paint is best for homes in Queensland's climate?
Premium exterior acrylics with high UV blockers for outside. Low-VOC, washable interior acrylics for inside.
Does Brisbane's humidity or heat require special paint types or techniques?
We use tropical-grade coatings and adjust application windows to avoid direct midday sun. Hot-weather thinners can extend open time.
What is the difference between interior paint and exterior paint?
Exterior paints contain extra UV absorbers, flexible binders and mildewcides. Interior formulations focus on scrub resistance and low odour.
Are low-VOC or eco-friendly paints available for my project?
Yes, most of our standard lines are already low-VOC. Zero-VOC options are available upon request.
Which paint finish is best for interior walls (matte, satin, gloss, etc.)?
Our usual recommendations are:
- Low-sheen or eggshell for most walls
- Satin or semi-gloss for kitchens, baths and kids' rooms
- Full gloss (water-based) on trims and doors for durability and pop
Is there a special paint for bathrooms or mould-prone areas?
We specify kitchen and bathroom acrylics with extra anti-mould additives and a satin or semi-gloss finish.
Safety & Warranty
Are your painters licensed and insured in Queensland?
Yes. QBCC-licensed, full WorkCover and $20m public liability.
Is it safe to stay in my house while it is being painted?
Generally yes. Low-VOC products mean minimal fumes. If oil-based primers are used we will advise you to ventilate or vacate briefly.
Are paint fumes dangerous, and how do you minimise them?
We specify low-VOC paints, keep areas ventilated and can use zero-VOC alternatives if you are highly sensitive.
What safety precautions does DHPainting take during the job?
Site-specific SWMS, correct fall-prevention gear, PPE, lead and asbestos training, tidy work zones and daily housekeeping.
Does DHPainting offer a warranty or guarantee on their work?
10-year workmanship warranty on exterior projects. We also honour the full manufacturer warranty on all products.
What if I am not happy with the paint job? Will you fix any issues?
We walk the job down with you, rectify anything you flag, and return promptly for any genuine workmanship defects, no arguments.
Clean-Up & After-Care
Will the painters clean up after finishing the job?
Yes. We leave the site cleaner than we found it, with drop-sheets removed, floors vacuumed and furniture returned.
What happens to leftover paint after the project is done?
We leave at least 500mL of each colour for touch-ups (often the full remaining tin). Excess can be taken for recycling if you prefer.
How do I maintain my new paint job once it is finished?
Interior: light dusting or a damp cloth for marks. Exterior: gentle non-caustic wash yearly and clear gutters to stop tannin or gecko-dropping stains.
How often should I repaint the exterior of my house in Brisbane?
About 10 years with premium systems. Very dark colours facing west may need attention after 5 to 6 years. For best performance we recommend colours tinted from a white base to reduce heat-related blistering and fading.
How often should I repaint the interior walls of my home?
Typically 7 to 10 years, or sooner in high-traffic areas or if you want a colour change.
Can painting my house increase its value or curb appeal?
Absolutely. A fresh, professional paint job is one of the highest-ROI upgrades before sale and protects the asset in the meantime.
